bf3091c6f2 fix: re-enable IQN + remove diagnostics for H100 baseline
- iqn_lambda restored to 0.25 (was 0.0 for NaN isolation)
- STEP_DIAG per-step logging removed (was temporary)
- FOXHUNT_GRAD_DIAG env var removed from Argo template

IQN NaN root cause fixed in 8cbabcef5 (f32-as-bf16 type mismatch).
Ready for H100 baseline deployment.

796fbd01cf fix: set c51_alpha_max=0.5 — prevent C51 gradient convergence on H100
H100 fold 2 showed grad_norm→0 when C51 fully replaced MSE (alpha=1.0).
MSE provides a non-vanishing gradient floor. Default 0.5 = 50/50 blend.
Hyperopt can search [0.3, 0.9].

5b4561fc27 diag: disable IQN (iqn_lambda=0) to isolate H100 NaN source
Graph recapture ruled out as NaN cause (NaN persists without graph
invalidation). Now testing: does NaN disappear when IQN is disabled?
If yes → IQN backward/Adam produces NaN on H100.
If no → NaN is in the main C51/MSE pipeline.

Also reverts graph invalidation hack from previous diagnostic commit.

fce606a421 fix(critical): d_adv_logits buffer under-allocation — 32 elements short
The f32→bf16 cast in cast_d_logits_to_bf16() reads
b*(b0+b1+b2+b3)*na + 32*4 elements, but d_adv_logits_buf and
d_adv_logits_bf16 were allocated with only +32*3 padding (96 vs 128).

The 32 extra f32 reads went past the allocation into adjacent GPU
memory. On H100 with 80GB and different memory layout, this grabbed
NaN/garbage values. The NaN propagated through the cuBLAS backward
pass into grad_buf, killing training at step ~720 (non-deterministic
depending on what lives in adjacent memory).

Fix: allocate +32*4 padding in d_adv_logits_buf, d_adv_logits_bf16,
and d_adv_logits_mse to match the cast kernel's access pattern.

Also reverts c51_alpha_max default to 1.0 — the gradient collapse
was from this buffer bug, not C51 premature convergence. The
c51_alpha_max parameter is kept for hyperopt exploration.

a0aab3baa5 feat: add c51_alpha_max to cap MSE→C51 blend and prevent gradient starvation
H100 baseline (20 epochs) showed gradient collapse at epoch 10: C51
cross-entropy converges its distributional fit before the policy converges,
leaving zero gradient signal. The collapse happened 5 epochs after C51
reached alpha=1.0 (pure C51, zero MSE).

Fix: cap the C51 alpha ramp at c51_alpha_max (default 0.5) so MSE always
contributes (1 - alpha_max) of the primary gradient. MSE loss measures
Q-error directly and only goes to zero when Q-values are correct, not
just when the distribution shape is right.

- c51_alpha_max added to DQNHyperparameters (default 0.5)
- Added to PSO search space as 15th dimension (range [0.3, 0.9])
- Added to TOML profiles: smoketest, production, hyperopt
- Training loop caps alpha ramp at alpha_max instead of 1.0
- All 907 ml tests + 300 ml-core tests + 6 smoke tests pass

30f46c04c1 fix(critical): mean-reduce gradients + fix ExposureLevel 4-branch mismatch
Three root causes found and fixed:

1. SUM-reduced gradients without 1/N: all CUDA loss gradient kernels
(C51, MSE, IQN backward, CQL) accumulated per-sample gradients as
raw SUM. At batch=16384 (H100) the raw norm was 282x larger than
batch=58, causing gradient clipping to destroy signal-to-noise ratio
and collapse training at epoch 2-3. Now all kernels multiply by
   1/batch_size, making gradient scale batch-invariant.

2. ExposureLevel::target_exposure() used a flat 9-level scale that did
not match the 4-branch dir*mag encoding. The Rust backtest evaluator
computed wrong position sizes (e.g. 4x oversize for Short+Small).
Now uses dir x mag formula. Also fixed is_buy/is_sell/is_hold and
   from_trading_action for 4-branch semantics.

3. Rust epsilon-greedy only explored 5/9 exposure combos (0..5 instead
of dir*3+mag), ignored the magnitude branch on greedy, and used wrong
   indices for order/urgency (get(1)/get(2) instead of get(2)/get(3)).

LR recalibrated: old gradient_clip_norm was accidentally a batch-size-
dependent LR reducer (~60x at batch=58, ~16000x at batch=16384). With
mean-reduced gradients the clip rarely fires, so LR is now the sole
training speed control. Smoketest 1e-4 -> 2e-6, production 1e-4 -> 1e-5,
hyperopt range [1e-5,3e-4] -> [1e-7,1e-4].

Diagnostics: FOXHUNT_GRAD_DIAG=1 enables per-stage gradient norm logging.

6b7c7f8b70 fix(critical): spread_cost 50× too high + mirror negates all 17 directional features + IBKR costs
Three fixes:

1. spread_cost removed contract_multiplier ($50) — was computing in dollars
but PnL is in points, making spread 12.5× actual. The model saw every
trade as guaranteed loss → preferred Flat.

2. Mirror universe now negates ALL 17 directional features (returns, MACD,
Bollinger, SMA ratios, regression slope, CUSUM) + flips RSI. Was only
negating 4, teaching wrong direction on 50% of epochs.

3. tx_cost_multiplier updated to 0.18 bps (IBKR ES RT=$4.50/contract).
   min_hold_bars=10 for volume bars (~26s at 23 bars/min).

58ff8db406 fix: aux GEMM gradient explosion — scale 0.5→0.01 + clip after backward
The exposure aux backward GEMM amplifies gradients through the
hidden activation matrix (d_logits × h_b0), producing grad_norm=5000+.
With max_grad_norm=10, this throttles ALL gradients by 500x (lr/500).

Fix: reduce aux_weight 0.5→0.01 (50x) + clip_grad_buf_inplace after
aux GEMM to cap combined gradient at max_grad_norm.

bacaf2765a feat: leverage-based position cap (replaces hardcoded max_position)
max_position_absolute is now computed from max_leverage:
  max_position = floor(capital * max_leverage / (price * multiplier))

- Added max_leverage config field (default: 5.0)
- compute_max_position() derives position from leverage + median price
- Hyperopt risk_intensity scales max_leverage (not position directly)
- Updated all TOML configs: dqn-production, dqn-smoketest, dqn-localdev
- Hyperopt search space: max_leverage = [2.0, 10.0] (replaces [1.0, 4.0] contracts)
- GpuBacktestConfig wired with max_leverage for consistent eval

With $35K capital, ES at $5K, multiplier=50:
  5× leverage → floor(35000*5/250000) = 0.7 → 1 contract (safe)
Old default 2.0 contracts → 14× leverage (dangerous)

4c5f4049e5 fix: GPU training hang — VRAM oversubscription, counterfactual data loss, event leak
Three bugs causing the baseline RL training to hang on first epoch while
smoketest completes in 1.2s:

1. VRAM oversubscription (hang root cause): detect_gpu_hardware auto-scaling
computed n_episodes without accounting for 2x counterfactual doubling or
dtod_clone allocations, causing 4x actual memory vs budget. Replaced with
   configurable gpu_n_episodes field (smoketest=32, localdev=128, prod=4096).

2. Counterfactual experiences silently dropped: build_next_states_f32 received
n_episodes instead of n_episodes*2, and PER insert used base count instead
of doubled count — ~50% of augmented training data was generated then lost.

3. CudaEvent leak in hot loop: record_event(None) created+destroyed 8000 events
per epoch in forward_online_raw/f32. Pre-allocated 4 events in CublasForward
struct, eliminating driver overhead and handle leaks during CUDA Graph capture.

f5b21406a8 fix: restore batch_size to GPU profiles — profile defaults, not auto-scaling
Auto-scaling returned 8192 on 4GB RTX 3050 (should be 64), causing
17s/epoch instead of 0.28s. The VRAM math didn't account for IQN (1.1GB),
attention, IQL, replay buffer (70% VRAM).

Profile-tested values:
- RTX 3050: 64 (4GB, minimal)
- A100: 2048 (40-80GB)
- H100: 8192 (80GB, production)
- Default: 256 (conservative)

Auto-scaling remains as fallback for batch_size=0 (unknown GPU).

9aad6ff60e refactor: remove max_training_steps_per_epoch — always train full dataset
Epoch duration self-balances: bigger GPU → bigger auto-scaled batch →

behavior inconsistent between environments.

5546a45bc3 refactor: remove gpu_n_episodes override — auto-scale from VRAM everywhere
gpu_n_episodes was manually overridden in GPU profiles, training configs,
test files, and hyperopt — all set to 0 or small fixed values that
bypassed the auto-scaling logic, causing a div-by-zero crash in
train_baseline_rl.

Now: single auto-scaling path via optimal_n_episodes() from VRAM/SM
count. No manual override field. Cap at 16384 (consistent with
AutoBatchSizer's 8192 cap pattern). Floor at 32 for small GPUs.

Removed gpu_n_episodes from:

68e83bef0e fix: async adam_step HtoD + batch_size=0 auto — root cause of >128 hang
The batch_size >128 hang was caused by cudarc's synchronous
memcpy_htod for the adam_step counter. At batch_size=128 the
sync completes fast enough, but at 509+ the pipeline drain
from the sync interacts with CUDA Graph replay timing and
deadlocks the stream.

Replaced all 3 memcpy_htod(&[self.adam_step]) calls with raw
cuMemcpyHtoDAsync_v2 — zero pipeline drain, zero CPU sync.

Production TOML set to batch_size=0 (AutoBatchSizer drives it).
AutoBatchSizer caps at 8192 for RL training.

10ecd397f2 fix: batch_size=128 in production TOML — 1024 causes training hang
batch_size=1024 has never been tested on H100. It was always
overridden by the CLI default (128) in all previous runs.
Our changes exposed this latent bug by conditional batch_size
override logic.

Root cause of the hang is unknown (likely CUDA Graph capture
with batch_size=1024 buffers). Setting to known-working 128
while we investigate. The batch_size=1024 hang investigation
is tracked in the mega-graph refactor plan.

5363185721 perf: dynamic batch sizing — AutoBatchSizer drives batch_size on H100
Set batch_size=0 in config/gpu/h100.toml as sentinel for auto-compute.
The constructor now treats batch_size==0 as "let AutoBatchSizer drive":
it uses the VRAM-computed ceiling capped at 8192, instead of the static
1024 that was wasting >90% of H100's 80GB VRAM bandwidth.

Previously AutoBatchSizer computed the optimal batch (e.g. 2085808) but
the profile's batch_size=1024 always won. Now with batch_size=0 the
sizer's result flows through, enabling full SM occupancy on H100.

cb8afe3caf feat: parameterized Argo WorkflowTemplate for Databento downloads
Replace hardcoded K8s Job with reusable Argo WorkflowTemplate
(databento-download) parameterized by schema, output-dir, parallel,
and node-pool. Add argo-download.sh CLI wrapper matching the
argo-train.sh pattern. Remove old streaming job file.

828417b523 fix: test reads threshold from dqn-smoketest.toml — no hardcoded values
Integration test now loads imbalance_bar_threshold and ewma_alpha from
config/training/dqn-smoketest.toml. Single source of truth for all
config values. Production threshold lowered to 0.5 for maximum bar yield.
